Islam Elnebishy is an Egyptian dancer and choreographer, based in Germany.
He’s a graduate of Maat | CCDC contemporary dance school and currently enrolled in the MA CuP (Choreography and Performance) at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen. He also studied in the year-long programme at Cairo Initiative for Liberal Studies and Arts (CILAS) in 2016.
As a dancer and performer he has worked with Jorge Crecis, Olivier Dubois, Karima Mansour, Manuel Pelmus, among others. He has directed two short dance films and has been focusing on his own work since 2017, creating a number of performances. During his Radar Sofia residency in September-October, Islam will continue researching his piece “Matter of perspective”, dealing with some very basic notions of dance, such as imagination, perception, interpretation and representation.
Proposing an interplay between physical images and spoken word, Islam’s practice has a critical and dramaturgical potential that is challenging tendencies in contemporary dance and audiences’ perceptions, stereotypes and expectations.
